Who We Are

Materials Science and Engineering is a broad interdisciplinary field of science and engineering discipline that covers the structure of metals, ceramics, polymers and composite materials from atomic to macro-scale, their physical and chemical properties and behaviors that change depending on these structures, the development of production processes, the production of useful materials and recycling research. In the courses offered in the Materials Science and Engineering program, special emphasis is placed on the microstructure-property-performance relationship and the factors affecting material behavior in their intended applications. Since design is often constrained by material properties, materials hold critical importance across all engineering disciplines. Advances in materials science bring about new design criteria and enable the creation of innovative products. For this reason, most engineering faculty programs include at least one course related to Materials Science and Engineering. Today, materials are evolving at an unprecedented pace, allowing engineers to enhance the performance of existing products and develop innovative technologies that simplify all aspects of our lives. Consequently, Materials Science and Engineering has become a key discipline and one of the most exciting fields offering career opportunities in a competitive global economy.

  • The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Eskişehir Technical University was established in 1993 under the name of Ceramic Engineering. It became the first department in Turkey to adopt the name of Materials Science and Engineering in 2002 and was also the first to introduce education in English.
  • The medium of instruction in the department is English. The program duration is a total of 5 years, including a 1-year English preparatory class and a 4-year undergraduate program. The department is located on the İki Eylül Campus of Eskişehir Technical University and spans a 5,000 m² area.
  • The Materials Science and Engineering program at Eskişehir Technical University was first accredited by MÜDEK (a member of EUR-ACE and the International Engineering Alliance) on September 30, 2009. Subsequently, the program was reaccredited on September 30, 2014, and September 30, 2019, ensuring continuous accreditation until September 30, 2025.
